Panda Antivirus Pro 2015

Each year Panda attempts to move in a new direction, but each year they fall short in most respects. While there are a few areas where Panda succeeds, the negatives outweigh the positives. 

For starters, our tests showed Panda Antivirus to be about average in both virus protection and removal. 

Resource usage, the measure of how much drain the antivirus software puts on your PC, tended to be higher than we'd like to see. 

Then there is Panda's tech support which can best be described as sad.

Virus & Spyware Protection: 88%

Panda's virus and spyware protection is fairly good. Independent testing labs gave Panda "passing" grades in regard to real-time protection and removal. 

Panda blocked about 90% of known viruses and other threats during our own in-house tests, which puts it in line with what other labs report. 

Overall, it's a decent performance, but other areas leave the product wanting. More on that in a second. 


Resource Usage: 70% 

As with other areas of Panda, resource usage was average all around. When running idle, CPU stayed mostly at 0% with unusual peaks as high as 11%, the same as we saw with its sibling product Panda Internet Security. Memory usage was a little high averaging around 175MB. 

When running a full system scan, that's when we started seeing a much heavier footprint. CPU usage ranged from 30%-60%, while memory was consistently high, around 210MB. For our 2GB testing PCs, that memory usage is quite a bit more than most of the competition this year. 


User Interface: 73%

Panda makes a big departure from last year's interface with a design that looks much like the Windows 8 "tile" layout. 

Instead of a more logical, simple navigation, this can sometimes be difficult to find which section you need, especially since you need to scroll left to right to all available tiles. 

This interface might makes sense on a tablet but on a desktop of laptop, it's not great.

Inside, each section is better arranged, where most consumers will quickly find what they're after. 

It's not that Panda has a horrible user interface, don't get us wrong. It just doesn't make much sense in some areas. At some point, when touch screens are everywhere, this interface might make sense. For now though, a more traditional layout would probably be a better option for most people. 


Technical Support: 50% 

In spite of the high resource usage, Panda had pretty good virus detection, so we had hopes that the software might do well overall, but during our review process, we uncovered something unsettling. 

Panda has been using a third-party support provider called, "Advanced Tech Support." When we called their phone support line, we were confronted with a long automated recording informing us that the FTC has filed a complaint against the company and have suspended all business until a verdict is reached. 

Ouch. While we're not one to pass judgment as to what happened, something appears to be off the rails with Advanced Tech Support and Panda. While this issue may well be resolved amicably in court sometime soon, it leaves Panda's customers in the lurch in the meantime. 

Without phone support, your only options are of the self-help, do-it-yourself variety. 

For everyone involved, Panda and consumers alike, we hope this is resolved quickly.

With about average protection, self-help only tech support, heavier system resource footprint, and a field of highly advanced competitors, Panda Antivirus Pro 2015 scores pretty poorly this year. 

Each year, Panda delivers a new look and a decent feature list, so we always have high hopes that the company will bring it all together in a truly great product. 

Unfortunately, in no small part because of the ongoing court proceedings over the product's tech support, this isn't the year. 

Avast Pro Antivirus 2015


Typically, Avast has had a good reputation in the antivirus community for respectable antivirus software. Avast's 2015 version brings the same generally good protection, but falls short in a few key areas. 

The most disappointing was their technical support, falling far below our expectations as well as those of the industry in general. 

A few false-positives were detected during testing, but real-time detection was otherwise acceptable. 

All things considered, Avast Pro Antivirus 2015 winds up being an average antivirus software solution.

Virus & Spyware Protection: 91% 

Most tests showed Avast to range from average to good during virus and spyware protection testing. In our own tests, Avast was impressively effective over 90% of the time against real-time threats and virus removal. However, there were some setbacks with removing more stubborn viruses. 

Avast's performance was confirmed in independent testing labs for having generally good protection. However, Avast did have a number of false positives (wrongly identified threats). While false positives are a concern, we tend not to judge this as harshly as long as there are reasonably few 

Overall, an impressive antivirus protection record. 


Resource Usage: 88% 

Generally light, Avast's resources used less than 1% CPU while in real-time protection mode, and only about 20MB of memory on our 2GB RAM testing PCs. 

During a full system scan the CPU usage ranged from 25%-75%. At the same time, memory was consistent at around 30MB with only a few peaks as high as 80MB. 


User Interface: 85%

Avast's user interface is easy to use and very user-friendly. The overall design is modern looking and clearly labeled, making whatever you need to find easy. 

There are a handful of accessible tools that are simple enough for anyone to use and understand. 

Aside from Avast's poorly labeled technical support links, their user interface is one of the nicer ones we've seen this year. 


Technical Support: 50% 

For an otherwise decent product, Avast really drops the ball when it comes to technical support. 

At first glance, their support looks top-notch. There's a forum link, a support ticket option, a searchable knowledgebase, and even a phone number. 

But that's where things get fuzzy. Fast. 

In order to submit a ticket, there are several hurdles to overcome, including annoying pop-ups and many selections to be made just to be allowed to ask your question. 

Even if you label your question "critical," you may not get a response for a few days. 

This lack of transparency and clarity is very disappointing from Avast. 

If you're ready to call them instead, there's a whole new set of problems to deal with. 

During our testing, we called their technical support center who claimed to have centers in the Czech Republic as well as the US. However, we were routed to Costa Rica for some strange reason—even though we were calling from the US (perhaps because of the time zone similarity). 

While it true Avast will give you free support for minor issues like configuration, installation help, etc., that's where the "free" part ends. 

For help with a real virus infection, you're going to need to pay a one-time fee of $119 for them to remove it for you (or $179 for a whole year of service). This is the highest one-time fee of any of the antivirus companies we've seen this year. 

Add in some bad customer reviews, and Avast's technical support is downright disappointing for an otherwise decent antivirus software. 


Conclusion - Overall Score: 76%

Avast Pro Antivirus falls towards the end of our rankings this year. It's a solid, basic antivirus with some good features, but noticeable problems. 

Even though Avast misidentified a handful of false-positive threats, we'd rather see them catch the wrong stuff then nothing at all. 

The biggest place where Avast falls flat is its technical support. Not only is it the most expensive we've seen this year, but it's also the most difficult to use. Even if you think you'll never need technical support, at least having the peace of mind of good support can be worth everything. Unfortunately, Avast doesn't deliver in this department. 

Overall, Avast Pro Antivirus 2015 is a decent antivirus software with good extra features. However, there are far better options for a well-rounded security suite.

McAfee AntiVirus Plus 2015

Most people trust a well-known brand like McAfee just because they've been around a long time. But brand recognition doesn't always equate to good antivirus software. 

Such is the case with McAfee AntiVirus Plus 2015. Unfortunately, McAfee seems to be resting on name-recognition alone again this year. There haven't been any major upgrades or perceivable improvements to their software for some time now. 

The virus protection scores right down the middle in the "average" range. 

The user interface is still awkward to use and downright ugly. 

McAfee's technical support is reasonable enough for basic questions but expensive for more serious issues.

Even though McAfee Antivirus comes with a built-in firewall, a rare feature for basic antivirus software, they still only score average across the board for overall protection among independent testing labs. 

Even our own in-house tests showed McAfee to be effective at blocking known virus and malware threats only 80% of the time. Not exactly a stellar score. 

With such mediocre scores virus protection, it's hard to recommend McAfee this year. 


Resource Usage: 78% 

At first glance, McAfee's system resource usage is low when running idle: CPU usage was less than 1% and memory usage was only about 140MB on average. 

A full system scan is another story. 

Our testing PCs were nearly maxed out on CPU power, and the memory ranged from 125MB-160MB. The consistently high CPU usage is very concerning. When running a full scan like this, McAfee can seriously slow down your PC. 

Unfortunately, these are the same types of results we hear back from our customers in our annual surveys, too. 


User Interface: 60%

The McAfee user interface is it's weakest point. Most antivirus companies update their interface every year or two; McAfee hasn't changed a thing in years, and it shows. 

For starters, it's cramped, grey, boring, and not easy to use. 

Each small section clicks open to an inner window with expandable sections within that. Each expandable section then needs to be clicked open, where you must scroll through a tiny window to find what you're looking for. (Scrolling and navigating inside a tiny interface is the norm with this software; it's juts plain awkward.) 

On top of that, the number buttons and selections within can be overwhelming without careful examination. 

Ultimately, McAfee's user interface looks as though only minimal effort has gone into it with minimal thought as to how users need to interact with it. In our view, it's due for an overhaul. 


Technical Support: 71% 

The technical support for McAfee is usable for the majority of questions you may have. They provide very good video tutorials, FAQ pages, chat, email, and forums for the most common issues. 

If you need further help, McAfee first requires you to install their "Virtual Assistant" to scan your system and attempt to fix any existing problems (for the record, we repeatedly tried to install this software; it failed installation each time.) 

If you need to then talk to a technician, phone support is available, but person-to-person support is going to cost you. Virus removal assistance is $89.95, or you can upgrade to $179.95/year for full technical support. Your options are basically: expensive or more expensive.

McAfee 2015 was a disappointment for us. With too many issues like tech support costs and a weak interface, this version is a letdown, particularly after a poor showing last year, too. 

Even though it includes a software firewall and an excellent vulnerability scanner, the value of those things doesn't outweigh the overall virus protection which was average in most areas. 

As a leader in the antivirus industry, McAfee could—and should—deliver a stronger product.
